It came to me that I did not recall ever using that comforting touch with Aaron. Or Isaac for that matter. A stroke on the nose was a Caleb comfort.
I've always worried how each little boy I've been blessed with would perceive my love. This battle was especially difficult in the midst of all the hormones surrounding my second pregnancy. I feared would not have the heart to love my second little one the way I loved my precious Caleb. Even more, I feared I would love Isaac more. My emotions ran rampant and truly toyed with my heart.
Now tonight, for possibly the first time, I have realized that it truly is possible to love each of my children uniquely without loving them any more or less than another.
Each one of my three little boys has a personal touch that I associate solely with him. It's a connection a comfort that has gone unnoticed for this long.
For Aaron it's running my fingers through the fine hair at the base of his neck. What used to be his baby curl.
For Isaac, it's a gentle tickling of his skinny little ankles that have forever poked out beneath his Bubba.

And Caleb, I will always remember drifting to sleep to the soothing touch of a stroke on his nose.

Sidney was the only grandchild for a few years. I remember one of my children fearing that I would use all my grandmother love up on her and not have the capacity to love any others as much. I told this child that my heart would grow larger with each grandchild to encompass this love, and, indeed it has. How I love my grandchildren, and how I miss Caleb. We think of you at this tender time of year.
I love each of my nieces and nephews very much and feel like I show my love a little differently depending on their personality and age. You are a wonderful mother.
Beautiful Alison...I remember comforting all of my kids with soothing strokes from the forehead to the tip of their nose. It was taught to me by a wise older sister...Renee and I bet she doesn't even remember that.
My friend once told me that each of your children has your whole heart--you just grow a new heart as each one joins your family. It's true. What a sweet post.
So sweet. I too have noticed that I use distinct soothing touches for both of my children. I do use the nose stroke for both, though, when I am trying to convince tired eyes to close.
I love that you have a picture of each comforting touch. What a great memento.
